1997 NAQT Conference Championships
Harvard hosted the first Northeast Quiz League Championships this saturday
with 18 teams from 8 schools participating. Teams were divided into two
brackets with the top three teams from each advancing to the playoffs.

Johns Hopkins University hosted the first Atlantic Conference
Championships on November 14-15. 18 conference teams attended, and
participated in a full round robin with a best of three between the top
two teams deciding the championship.
In the round robin, Maryland A defeated Virginia A (round 11) 425-220.
Virginia won game 2 of the best of three 400-350
Maryland won the deciding game and the championship 465-305

The NAQT Big Ten tournament was held November 14-15
at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The 18 teams were
split into 2 pools of 9 teams each, who played a round-robin. Then,
each of the top 12 played against the top six teams in the other bracket,
while each of the bottom six played the other three bottom six teams and
then played a round-robin. One Iowa team (Absolut Roswell) carried two
Masters players, and as per NAQT rules, they were ineligible for the
championship and, after being used for seeding purposes after the
preliminary round-robin, were stricken from the won-loss records; the top
teams, therefore, played only 13 games instead of 14.

In the best of three finals, Chicago held a 1-0 lead thanks to their
450-175 win over Michigan Smack in the preliminaries. Chicago then won
Game 2 by a 420-245 score to win their first Big Ten championship in
anything since nineteen thirty-whatever.

Despite snow, NAQT's Northern Quiz League Championship Tournament was held
at Carleton College on Saturday. Twelve teams participated in a full round
robin, with W-L results as follows:

The tournament also featured an individual "shootout" competition in two
rounds of 50 tossups each. The shootout champion was Adam Malamen of St.
