2009 NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament Results
The University of Chicago claimed their record sixth ICT Division I overall title by defeating the University of Illinois in the final game 405-225. Illinois had handed Chicago their first loss of the tournament in the first game of the final, but a balanced team effort in which each member contributed a powered tossup helped Chicago secure the championship in the second game. Harvard University finished third after losing a playoff to Illinois for the right to contest the final, with Minnesota claiming fourth and West Coast rivals California-Irvine and Stanford sharing fifth place.
In the Undergraduate competition, Harvard University defended their championship by defeating the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in a thrilling final game. Both teams gained and lost 100-point leads and the score was tied 270-270 heading into the 26th and final tossup before the Crimson prevailed. Harvard's third-place overall ranking is also the highest finish ever by an all-undergraduate team, surpassing the 4th-place finish earned by Princeton's 2002 squad. Harvard's Kyle Haddad-Fonda also extended his streak of appearing in a NAQT national championship final to five years, dating back to his time as a high school competitor for Seattle's Lakeside School. Dartmouth College finished third by making the top bracket and finishing in a tie for 7th overall.
The University of Chicago claimed their second Division II title and, like the 2005 team, defeated the University of Michigan in the final to do so. Chicago was undefeated until a loss in the final preliminary game to Michigan, but gained their revenge with a 225-190 win in the championship game. The DI and DII titles won by Chicago mark the first time in ICT history that one school has claimed multiple titles in the same year. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute finished third and Yale fourth after both teams went 11-2 before falling in a half-game playoff for the right to advance to the championship.
Northeast Alabama Community College of Rainsville, AL overwhelmed Valencia Community College of Orlando 315-75 to claim the Top Community College Award. The final was required as both teams finished in a tie for 14th place, the first time that two community colleges have finished in the top half of the Division II field in the same year. J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, who won the inaugural NAQT Community College Championship Tournament in February, finished third.
