College Invitational Tournaments
NAQT is pleased to announce the availability of regular Invitational Series questions for use at collegiate tournaments in 2008-2009. Each set consists of 15 rounds of 24 tossups and 24 bonuses.
These questions are well suited for new and less experienced players and NAQT recommends that they be used for juniorbird tournaments, CUT-style tournaments, rivalry matches, or community college events (whose very nature limits the experience of players).
Institutions interested in hosting collegiate events using invitational questions should contact NAQT at hosting@naqt.com to reserve a set. The cost is $35.00 plus $18.00 per team in attendance. This includes regular shipping and handling; faster service is available at extra cost.
NAQT also licenses its invitational series for use in singles tournaments (commonly held after invitational events); for such events the cost is $35.00 plus $5.00 per player.
Hosts may keep all of the money that they make selling copies of the sets used at the tournament to participating schools. Alternatively, hosts may give copies to participating schools. Note that no more than one (printed) copy may be sold or distributed to each school in attendance.
NAQT maintains an extensive contact list for established programs and potential players at schools without formal teams and is happy to share the list with schools running tournaments to help them recruit the largest possible field and get new people and schools involved with quiz bowl.
NAQT does not have a formal geographic exclusivity policy at the college level (as it does at the high school level), but will work with interested schools to create as many tournaments as possible with its sets.
To encourage the growth of quiz bowl, NAQT will also provide free questions for community college tournaments in 2008-2009 that are held in states/territories that did not have a community college tournament in 2007-2008. Follow the link to see if your state qualifies; there is no limit on the number of tournaments that make take advantage of this offer within a single state. This offer is open to community college and four-year college hosts alike.
Please note that it is the responsibility of the host school to prominently announce the name of the NAQT set that it is using for its tournament (e.g., "Invitational Series #59") so that players can make sure that they aren't planning on attending two event using the same questions. Hosts should make it clear to potential attendees that they should check the NAQT schedule and list of sets used at past tournaments to verify this. NAQT has a full description of the various parties' responsibilities in maintaining question security.
Sample packets are available for download.
If you have any questions about the suitability of NAQT questions, please do not hesitate to contact NAQT at naqt@naqt.com.
