When moderators or other staff arrive they should go to the GSB/CBA atrium and socialize. At 9:30 they should go to GSB 4.304 to receive any last-minute updates on the tournament and its rules.

Field:

As of June 5, 2002, the final field will probably be about 54 teams. The current field is available online.

Format:

The format will be a ten-round power-matched tournament on Saturday. All teams will play ten rounds; those with three or fewer losses (maximum of eight) after the tenth round will advance to a round-robin playoff on Sunday (with records not carrying over). The top two teams from the playoff will advance to the finals. If the top two teams have equal records in the playoffs, the final will be a single game. Otherwise the top team will need to win one game and the second-place team will need to win two. Ties for the finals spots will be played off, not broken by head-to-head results on statistics. More information about the format.

Scrimmages:

Teams that do not qualify for the playoffs are encouraged to come back on Sunday to play against any other teams they want (or to mix-and-match from across the country) on the playoff questions. These scrimmage rounds will be held in the CBA building and moderated by NAQT and the host institution. Teams wishing to participate in the scrimmage rounds should arrive at the atrium by about 9:00 and check in with NAQT Executive Director Dwight Kidder who will be organizing the scrimmage rounds. Please note that all students, even alternates or observers, are welcome to take part.

Registration:

The registration fee is $175 per team if paid before April 1, 2002. The fee is $200 per team if paid after April 1, 2002. Schools whose first qualifying event occurred after April 1, 2002, have until May 1, 2002 to register at the $175 rate. Copies of the questions used at the tournament may be ordered at the tournament for $25 (the price is $40 if they are ordered from NAQT after the conclusion of the event). The registration deadline is May 15, 2002.

If you are attending the tournament and have not already done so, please fill out the online registration form.

NAQT will be physically registering teams, disbursing information folders, answering questions, and handling any outstanding administrative matters between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. at the Townlake Hotel, the recommended hotel for the tournament (see below for address). NAQT will also be registering teams on Saturday morning, though we would prefer to handle as many teams as possible Friday night to allow the tournament to run as smoothly as possible.

Friday Night Socializing:

Between 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., rooms will be set up at the Townlake Hotel for teams to scrimmage against each other on questions from previous NAQT HS NCTs. This scrimmaging is free and will be moderated by members of the quiz bowl clubs at Texas A&M and the UT-Austin. We encourage all teams to come by to play a practice game or two.

From 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., there will also be ice cream and soda available at the Townlake Hotel for teams and coaches. This will be an opportunity for kids to talk to staff members about the tournament or playing in college, to meet teams from across the country, or to talk with seniors who will be attending the same college. Attendance is not mandatory, but we hope to see most of the teams there, even those not staying at the hotel.

Prizes:

The top four teams in the field will each receive a team trophy and their members (up to five) and coach will each receive an individual trophy. In addition, the top (non-selective) school with fewer than 500 students will receive a team trophy and individual trophies for its members and coach. The top eight individual scorers in the non-playoff rounds and the top three non-senior individual scorers will receive All-Star trophies.

Northwest/Continental Airlines and Southwest Airlines are the preferred air carriers for transportation to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (airport code AUS) for the HSNCT. Transportation:

Tournament staff will shuttle teams from the Town Lake Holiday Inn to the tournament site between 7:30 and 9:00 on Saturday morning and between 8:00 and 8:45 on Sunday morning. Teams without their own transportation and wanting to make use of these shuttles should e-mail hsnct@naqt.com to confirm that they want rides and should be in the hotel lobby by 7:30 a.m. on each morning.

The host site for the tournament has warned us that parking is "at your own risk" on campus on weekend mornings. Unless teams are planning to arrive very early, walk a fair distance, or settle for a ticket, NAQT and the host institution recommend that they plan on using the tournament shuttles.

Practice Questions:

Teams that have been invited to compete at the 2002 High School National Championship Tournament may be interested in purchasing the questions from previous years in order to prepare for the event. Sets are available for the 1999, 2000, and 2001 championships as well as all 30 of NAQT's regular season sets.

Teams may also want to purchase the various NAQT study guides listing the works of literature, art, and music (and their creators) that have been mentioned most frequently in NAQT questions from 1996 to the present. These are also available on our practice questions page.
