Reserved Berths at the HSNCT

Starting with the 2007 NAQT High School National Championship, spots in the field will be reserved for the winners of certain prestigious tournaments. Those tournaments are:

  • National or international championships using NAQT questions

  • State championships using NAQT questions

  • Non-NAQT state championships in states that do not have an official NAQT state championship, that have had a paucity of qualifying tournaments, and that have approached NAQT in advance to obtain this status.

As of August 1, 2007, no state has approached NAQT to request the reservation of a 2008 HSNCT berth for its state champion. The only state to do so for the 2007 HSNCT was Oregon.

One spot will be held for each NAQT state championship. Following the completion of that championship, it will be offered to the winner of that tournament. If that school has already registered or if it declines the invitation, that spot in the field will be returned to the general invitation pool and given to the first team on the waitlist (if the field is full) or the next team to register (if the field is not full). Spots will be held for approximately one week for teams to make up their mind, but this duration is at the discretion of NAQT and may be reduced as the tournament approaches.

One spot may also be held for the top small (public) school (by NAQT's definition) at each NAQT state championship, if NAQT determines that there is likely to be a significant field in competition for that title.

The number of reserved berths for national or international championships will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

NAQT reserves the right to add additional tournaments to this list (or otherwise modify this policy) if it feels that an event is sufficiently prestigious and late enough in the year to warrant consideration.
