Field:
36 Division I teams, 32 Division II teams.
Schedule:
The Division I tournament will begin with eleven rounds of pre-arranged play during which teams will face opponents from different regions of the country and of varying strength. At that point, teams will be split into six separate groups based on their won-loss records, the top two teams in each initial division, the third and fourth place teams in each initial division, and so on. Any ties that matter for placement into the next bracket will be broken by mini-games during a pre-scheduled tiebreaker round. Teams will then play four more games against the teams they have not faced in their new divisions (with the game against the team they played in the preliminary round carrying over to the new division). A team's record in this new division will determine its final placement in the tournament. At the completion of these four games, the top two teams in the top division will play in a final, with the higher placing team, if any, needing to win once and the lower placing team needing to win twice. If the top two teams enter the final tied, the final will be a single game. The undergraduate final will be held between the top two undergraduate teams unless either of the following conditions are met:
- the teams are not within six ranks of each other, or
- one of the teams is in the overall final.
The Division II tournament will begin with seven rounds of pre-arranged play during which teams will face opponents from different regions of the country and of varying strength. At that point, teams will be split into four separate groups based on their won-loss records, the top two teams in each initial division, the third and fourth place teams in each initial division, the fifth and sixth place teams in each initial division, and the seventh and eighth place teams in each initial division. Any ties that matter for placement into the next bracket will be broken by mini-games during a pre-scheduled tiebreaker round. Teams will then play six more games against the teams they have not faced in their new divisions (with the game against the team they played in the preliminary round carrying over to the new division). A team's record in this new division will determine its final placement in the tournament. At the completion of these six games, the top two teams in the top division will play in a final, with the higher placing team, if any, needing to win once and the lower placing team needing to win twice. If the top two teams enter the final tied, the final will be a single game.
Registration:
The registration fees for the tournament are as follows:- Base fee: $140 (Division I) or $120 (Division II)
- Moderator: $50 (per experienced moderator)
- Buzzer System: $10 (per fully-functional system)
Copies of the questions used at the tournament will be available for $25 (or $35 for the sets from both divisions). These may be purchased at the time of registration or immediately after the completion of the tournament. The questions will be available for $45 on the NAQT website as practice material for next year.
IMPORTANT: This fee assumes that payment is postmarked (or a purchase order is supplied) no later than April 1, 2002. Teams paying after this date, including at the tournament itself, will be charged an additional $20.
In addition, after March 1, 2002, invitation acceptances will be considered final. Should a team cancel before March 15, 2002, it will still be liable for one-half of its base registration fee. Teams that cancel after March 15, 2002 (including tournament no-shows) will be liable for entire base registration fee.
Prizes:
The top three teams in Division I (Overall), Division I (Undergraduate), Division II (Overall), and Division II (Community College) will each receive team trophies and their members will receive individual awards. In addition, the top individual scorers for the tournament will be declared All-Stars and given awards. The exact number of All-Stars has not been determined.
Flights:
Northwest Airlines and Southwest Airlines are the preferred airlines for travel to the ICT. The discount code, which should be provided to your travel agent is NYQDW for Northwest and R9285 for Southwest. Note that the Northwest code may be used on the airline's website, but the Southwest code cannot be. It can, however, be used over the phone by calling the airline's special reservation number, 1-800-433-5368.
Rental Cars:
The official car rental agency of the 2002 ICT is Avis Rent-a-Car. The applicable discount code is J991580. Reservations can be made by calling Avis at (800) 331-1600 or online.
Hotels:
The following hotels are located near the competition site but are not the official hotels of the competition. No discount has been negotiated and no blocks of rooms have been reserved. NAQT and UNC hope to have preferred hotels listed soon, but if you need to make plans quickly and find their regular prices acceptable, any of these should do.

Practice Questions:
Teams that have been invited to compete at the 2002 Intercollegiate Championship Tournament may be interested in purchasing the questions from previous years in order to prepare for the event. Division I sets are available from the five previous ICTs, with separate Division II sets available from the 1998, 1999, and 2001 tournaments. Teams should be aware that ICT Division I questions are typically as much harder compared to (four-year) Sectionals questions as Sectionals questions are to Invitational Series and that ICT Division II questions are approximately equal in difficulty to (four-year) Sectionals questions.
