Qualification:

Schools qualify to send teams to the ICT through the performance of their teams at Sectional Championship Tournaments in February and at select international events. Details about the way in which schools (and not specific teams or players) qualify for ICT and which players may represent a school at the ICT may be found on the ICT Qualification Page. This page also details the effects on players' Division II eligibility of playing in an SCT or qualifying for or playing at an ICT.

Field:

32 Division I teams and 32 Division II teams.

Invitations:

All invitations to the ICT for Division I teams and Division II teams are listed. Schools have one week from their reception of an invitation to accept or decline, though they may request an extension from NAQT if additional time is required. The initial bids must therefore be accepted or declined by Thursday, February 20, 2003. The acceptance period may be shortened if invitations are awarded nearer to the actual tournament.

To decline an invitation, send e-mail to ict@naqt.com. To accept an invitation, see the section below on Registration.

Schedule:

The overall schedule for the tournament has yet to be decided.

Registration:

The registration fee and discounts for the tournament are as follows:
  • Base fee: $175
  • Moderator: $50 discount (per experienced moderator)
  • Buzzer System: $10 discount (per fully-functional system)

Teams should register online to ensure that NAQT has their information. After NAQT receives that registration information, an electronic invoice will be generated. Teams that need paper invoices may request them in the "additional information" box on the registration form. Please note that team rosters may be changed at any time before the start of the ICT so it is neither necessary (or desirable) to wait to register until a team's composition has been definitively decided. Register as soon as possible and, if necessary, re-register when the composition of a team changes.

Copies of the questions used at the tournament will be available for $25 (or $35 for the sets from both divisions). These may be purchased at the time of registration or immediately after the completion of the tournament. The questions will be available for $45 on the NAQT website as practice material for next year.

IMPORTANT: This fee assumes that payment is postmarked (or a purchase order is supplied) no later than March 26, 2003. Teams paying after this date, including at the tournament itself, will be charged an additional $20.

In addition, after March 1, 2003, invitation acceptances will be considered final. Should a team cancel before March 15, 2003, it will still be liable for one-half of its base registration fee. Teams that cancel after March 15, 2003 (including tournament no-shows) will be liable for the entire base registration fee.

Prizes:

The top three teams in Division I (Overall), Division I (Undergraduate), Division II (Overall), and Division II (Community College) will each receive team trophies and their members (and coaches) will receive individual awards. In addition, the top eight individual scorers in Division I, the top eight individual scorers in Division II, and the top four individual scorers in Division II (Community College) will be given All-Star medals.

Flights:

The most convenient airport is Los Angeles International Airport (code LAX). Teams should also compare prices for flights to Burbank Airport (BUR), Long Beach Airport (LGB), Ontario International Airport (ONT), Van Nuys Airport (VNY), Orange County Airport (MGJ), John Wayne Airport (SNA), and Palmdale Regional Airport (PMD).

The official airline of the 2003 ICT is United Airlines. Teams that purchase tickets 30 days before April 3, 2003 will receive a 15% discount on full-fare tickets and a 10% discount on SuperSaver tickets. Those that do not purchase 30 days in advance will receive 10% discounts on full-fare tickets and a 5% discount on SuperSaver tickets. This offer can be used at Los Angeles International, Orange County, and Burbank Airports. You will need to call the Meetings Desk at 800.521.4041 and provide them with code 515BC to receive this discount.

Teams making flight arrangements should be sure to try the various discount airlines, including Southwest Air (with a hub at LAX) and JetBlue (with a hub at LGB), that fly to Los Angeles. Much better fares may be had from airports within a one- or two-hour drive, particularly if those are hubs for a discount airline.

Rental Cars:

To receive a discount, you will need to go to the Enterprise location in Westwood at 10799 Santa Monica Blvd. (310.475.8738). They will pick you up from LAX if you call them. If there are any problems getting the discount, call Don at UCLA at 310.850.0639. The reference number for this 15% discount is 756387.

Driving Directions:

Driving directions to the tournament site may be found on the UCLA website. It is also possible to get to UCLA using public transportation for teams not staying at the recommended hotel and who choose not to rent a car. NAQT does not recommend the use of public transportation by people without previous experience in the city. Teams considering public transportation may be interested in the MTA, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, and the Culver City Bus.

To get from LAX airport to UCLA by public transportation, take the Lot C LAX shuttle (free) to the LAX Transit Center. Then take any of the following buses to UCLA: Culver City Green Bus line 6 ($0.75, get off at the Ackermann turnaround), Metro Bus 561 West ($1.85, get off at Hilgard and Strathmore), Santa Monica Big Blue Bus line 3 ($0.50, get off at Westwood and LeConte).

To get from LAX to the Holiday Inn Hotel: Take the 405 N, and exit Sunset, traveling west. Make a right on Church Lane.

Parking:

A parking map is available on the UCLA website. Parking permits are $7 per day and may be purchased at registration. Parking is free after 9:00 p.m. (though that will not help tournament participants much). It is recommended that teams park in Lot 5 with Lot 6 as a backup.

Hotels:

The official hotel of the ICT is the Brentwood-Bel Air Holiday Inn Hotel:

170 North Church Lane
Los Angeles, CA 90049

fax: 310.472.1157

This hotel is located within a five-minute drive of the UCLA campus and about fifteen minutes from Los Angeles International airport. The hotel does not have an airport shuttle, but a taxi will cost approximately $25. NAQT has blocked rooms at this hotel that are available for $89 per night for quadruple occupancy. Parking is $10 overnight. You must register before March 13, 2003 to get this rate (afterwards it will be approximately $106 per room). To get this rate, tell the hotel that you are with "National Academic Quiz Tournaments Group" when you call to make a reservation. Finally, this hotel is well placed for exploring the more interesting parts of Los Angeles and will also house most of the non-local tournament staff.

The hotel has a twelve-person shuttle and will shuttle people to the campus for free (as UCLA falls within its two-mile radius), but NAQT cautions teams to not depend on this mode of transportation: The large number of people who will be want to take advantage of it will probably overwhelm the service. It is currently impossible to sign up for the shuttle except in person, at the hotel. As mentioned above, NAQT is trying to arrange bus service between the hotel and UCLA.

UCLA maintains a list of other hotels in the area in a variety of locations and price ranges; teams on a very tight budget might consider them.

Lunch Options:

All of the following places are located in or near Westwood Village except Northern Lights, which is behind Rolfe Hall. Westwood Village is about 10 minutes walking distance from the tournament site.

Preparation:

Teams that have been invited to compete at the 2003 Intercollegiate Championship Tournament may be interested in purchasing the questions from previous years in order to prepare for the event. Division I sets are available from the five previous ICTs, with separate Division II sets available from the 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002 tournaments. Teams should be aware that ICT Division I questions are typically as much harder compared to (four-year) Sectionals questions as Sectionals questions are to Invitational Series and that ICT Division II questions are approximately equal in difficulty to (four-year) Sectionals questions.
