2008 NAQT North Sectional Results

The NAQT North Sectional Championship Tournament was held on February 9, 2008 at Carleton College under the direction of the university's Academic Quiz Team and R. Robert Hentzel of National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC. The tournament was a qualifier for the 2008 Intercollegiate Championship Tournament (ICT), which will be held April 11-12 in St. Louis, MO.

Division I

There were ten teams from nine schools registered in Division I. Those teams played an initial round robin (statistics), after which the teams ranked as follows (sorted by win percentage and then PPTH):

  1. Minnesota A (8-1)
  2. Carleton (8-1)
  3. Drake (7-2)
  4. Iowa (7-2)
  5. North Dakota (5-4)
  6. Wisconsin (3-6)
  7. Grinnell (3-6)
  8. Iowa State (2-7)
  9. St. Olaf (1-8)
  10. Minnesota B (0-9)

At this point the field was divided into an upper bracket of four teams and a lower bracket of six teams. The upper bracket played a second round robin, while the teams in the lower bracket each played three games such that every team played one team in the upper third (i.e., #5 or #6), one team in the second third, and one team in the lower third.

According to NAQT's tiebreaker policy, a tiebreaker game would have been required here if teams were tied for the fourth spot with the same record but, since they weren't, none was necessary.

After the second round robin, the upper-bracket standings were:

  1. Carleton (11-1)
  2. Iowa (9-3)
  3. Drake (8-4)
  4. Minnesota A (8-4)

so Carleton and Iowa played an advantaged final to determine the champion. Iowa won two straight games and was named champion of the North Sectional. Carleton was the runner-up and Drake was given third place due to its superior PPTH.

There were five undergraduate teams at the Sectional (Minnesota B, Carleton, Drake, Grinnell, and St. Olaf) which was sufficient for NAQT to grant an automatic ICT bid to the top undergraduate team (which was Carleton).

The overall statistics may be found in NAQT's statistics database.

In addition to Iowa and Carleton, three additional teams received ICT bids in the initial round of invitations: Minnesota, Drake, and North Dakota.

The tournament also recognized eight Division I All-Stars:

Division II

There were twelve teams from nine schools registered in Division II. Those teams played an initial round robin (statistics), after which the teams ranked as follows (sorted by win percentage and then PPTH):

  1. Carleton A (11-0)
  2. Carleton B (10-1)
  3. Iowa (9-2)
  4. Grinnell (7-4)
  5. Minnesota (7-4)
  6. St. Olaf (5-6)
  7. Wisconsin (5-6)
  8. UM Morris (4-7)
  9. Carleton D (4-7)
  10. Iowa State (3-8)
  11. Drake (1-10)
  12. Carleton C (0-11)

The top two teams advanced to an advanaged final where Carleton A defeated Carleton B in the first game to win the title and the automatic bid to the ICT.

Carleton B also received an invitation to the ICT after its statistics were compared to other DII teams from around the country. Iowa is on the waitlist.

The tournament also recognized eight Division II All-Stars:
