The first annual Siouxper Bowl high school quiz bowl tournament was held on April 23, 2005, at the University of Sioux Falls under the direction of the university's Natural Science Area, its Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Larry Ort, and R. Robert Hentzel of National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC. The tournament was a qualifier for the 2005 NAQT High School National Championship.
Eleven teams attended from six schools in two states (South Dakota and Iowa). The teams played six preliminary games, after which the top eight advanced to single elimination playoffs for the championship. The six preliminary games were randomly determined for each school with some attempt made to minimize matches between teams from the same school.
St. Mary's Catholic School registered for the event, but did not show up. They were replaced in the field by Brandon Valley D.
After the preliminary games, the standings were:
| Rank | Team | Record | PPTH |
| 1 | Greater Sioux Falls Home School Association | 6-0 | 16.50 |
| 2 | Estherville-Lincoln (IA) | 6-0 | 11.96 |
| 3 | Brookings A | 4-2 | 9.96 |
| 4 | Brandon Valley C | 4-2 | 8.50 |
| 5 | Brookings B | 3-3 | 8.42 |
| 6 | Brandon Valley A | 3-3 | 7.21 |
| 7 | West Central | 2-4 | 6.46 |
| 8 | Tri-Valley B | 2-4 | 5.12 |
| 9 | Tri-Valley A | 1-5 | 4.50 |
| 10 | Brandon Valley B | 1-5 | 4.30 |
| 11 | Brandon Valley D | 1-5 | 3.12 |
Teams with identical records were ordered by points-scored-per-tossup-heard (PPTH).
The top eight teams by won-lost record advanced to the playoffs. This was a clean break since there was not a tie for eighth place.
In the first round of the playoffs, the Greater Sioux Falls Home School Association (the #1 seed) defeated Tri-Valley B (#8) 275-10, Estherville defeated West Central (#7) 245-10, Brandon Valley A (#6) upset Brookings A (#3) in a very close 135-130 game, and Brandon Valley C (#4) defeated Brookings B (#5) 150-100.
In the semifinals, the Home School Association (#1) beat Brandon Valley C (#4) 355-115 while Brandon Valley A (#6) pulled off a second upset by upending Estherville (#2) 275-75.
In the championship game, the Home School Association dismantled Brandon Valley A 275-75 despite the eventual loser having answered the first two tossups. In the consolation game for third place, Estherville defeated Brandon Valley C 185-115.
Estherville, the third-place finisher overall, was also the Top Small School in attendance (by NAQT's definition).
By virtue of finishing in the top 15% of the field, the Greater Sioux Falls Home School Association and Brandon Valley have qualified for the national championship. Estherville, as the Top Small School, also qualified, but had already received an invitation at an earlier tournament.
The tournament also recognized individual performances; the top eight scorers by tossup-points-scored-per-tossup-heard (PPTH) during the preliminary games were:
| Rank | Name | Team | Points per game |
| 1 | Nick Truelson | GSFHSA | 97.50 |
| 2 | Zach Carter | Estherville | 76.67 |
| 3 | Ben Kantack | Brookings A | 45.83 |
| 4 | Andrew Bakke | Brandon Valley C | 38.33 |
| 5 | Dan Rohlf | Brandon Valley A | 35.00 |
| 6 | James Francis | Brookings B | 34.17 |
| 7 | Harrison Hoffman | Tri-Valley A | 32.73 |
| 8 | Laurel Taylor | West Central | 27.50 |
In addition, Andrew Bakke (the #4 scorer overall!) of Brandon Valley C received a trophy for being the top sophomore scorer at the tournament, and Nick Truelson (the #1 scorer overall) of the GSFHSA received a trophy for being the top freshman scorer at the tournament.
Six of the top eight scorers at this tournament were underclassmen; this bodes extremely well for the future of South Dakota quiz bowl!
