Fall 2005 Siouxper Bowl Results

The second Siouxper Bowl high school quiz bowl tournament was held on November 12, 2005, at the University of Sioux Falls under the direction of the university's Natural Science Area, its Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Larry Ort, and R. Robert Hentzel of National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC. The tournament was a qualifier for the 2006 NAQT High School National Championship.

Sixteen teams attended from eleven schools in two states (South Dakota and Iowa). The teams played six preliminary games, after which every team that was 3-3 or better advanced to single elimination playoffs for the championship. The six preliminary games were randomly determined for each school with some attempt made to minimize matches between teams from the same school.

After the preliminary games, the standings were:

Teams with identical records were ordered by points-scored-per-tossup-heard (PPTH).

Every team with a 3-3 or better record advanced to the playoffs. This ended up being a total of nine teams. They were seeded into a 16-team single-elimination bracket; this resulted in byes for the top 7 teams and a single first-round game between seeds #8 and #9. In that first round, Brandon Valley C (#8) defeated Central Lyon A (#9) by a score of 180-130.

In the second round, Harrisburg (#6) eked out an upset over Sioux City North (#3) 165-160, the Greater Sioux Falls Home School Association (#1) defeated Brandon Valley C (#8) 210-195, Rapids City Central A (#2) defeated Brandon Valley A (#7) 210-105, and Roosevelt (#5) toppled Rapids City Central B (#4) 220-165).

In the semifinals, the Home School Association (#1) beat Roosevelt (#5) 270-215 while Rapids City Central A (#2) took out Harrisburg (#6) 295-130.

In the championship game, the Home School Association (#1) beat Rapids City Central A (#2) 340-155. In the consolation game for third place, Roosevelt defeated Harrisburg 260-120.

Harrisburg, the fourth-place finisher overall, was also the Top Small School in attendance (by NAQT's definition).

By virtue of finishing in the top 15% of the field, the Greater Sioux Falls Home School Association, Rapid City, and Roosevelt have qualified for the national championship. Harrisburg, the Top Small School, also qualified.

The tournament also recognized individual performances; the top eight scorers by tossup-points-scored-per-tossup-heard (PPTH) during the preliminary games were:
