Bangkok Invitational

NAQT is pleased to announce a high school quiz bowl tournament at Berkeley International School in Khet Bang Na, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, Thailand on Saturday, January 26, 2019.

Quiz bowl is an academic game in which teams of four players compete against each other to “buzz in” to answer questions about any conceivable subject. By competing in our quiz bowl tournaments, your students have the potential to join the ranks of former and current players at of Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, and Oxford in our Hall of Champions.

No prior experience with quiz bowl is necessary! No quiz bowl-specific equipment (like a buzzer system) is required! Coaches are not required to help with reading rounds, although it is appreciated (and coaches will be paid for their time if they do so).

The top teams will qualify for the 2019 Asian Championship, which will be held March 23–24, 2019 in Shanghai, China.

Additionally, top teams will qualify for the 2019 High School National Championship Tournament, which will be held May 24, 2019 - May 26, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The top teams from small schools will qualify for the 2019 Small School National Championship Tournament, which will be held May 3, 2019 - May 5, 2019 in Rosemont, Illinois (near Chicago), USA.

The opening meeting will go over the rules, format, and schedule. Coaches, players, and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions. Teams are also encouraged to ask questions in advance by e-mailing Joyce Sun (joyce.sun@naqt.com).

After the playoffs, there will be a brief awards presentation.

Eligibility

All secondary schools (public, private, magnet, charter, religious, online, etc.) are eligible to compete in this event. This tournament will use NAQT High School Eligibility Rules. No qualification is necessary. If you have any questions about eligibility, contact eligibility@naqt.com.

Staff

Coaches are not required to assist with the running of the tournament, but may moderate (read questions) in exchange for a USD 50 stipend. Alternatively, any team who provides a staff member (which could be the coach or someone else) can receive a USD 50 discount.

Format

The format of the tournament will be determined by the number of teams that register. All participants are guaranteed at least five games.

Registration

Coaches may register online. A free account on naqt.com is required.

Coaches may (and should) register without knowing which players will be coming; they can update the roster at any time before the tournament begins.

Fees & Payment

The base registration fee is USD 250 per team. There is a USD 50 discount for bringing a working buzzer system. The fee covers registration and one printed copy of the questions. The questions will be Invitational Series #176A-AS, which is an English-language question set customized for teams in Asia. The questions will not be distributed until the conclusion of the tournament; teams that leave early may pay USD 5 to have the question set shipped to them.

Teams will pay at check-in. Checks should be made out to “National Academic Quiz Tournaments”; if you prefer to pay in local currency, by credit card, by PayPal, or by TeleTransfer, contact Joyce Sun (joyce.sun@naqt.com).

Awards

The top three teams will receive trophies. The top six individual scorers will receive All-Star awards.

Players must have heard at least 60 tossups during the preliminary rounds to be eligible for individual awards. Individual awards are based entirely on performance during the preliminary (not playoff) games.

Questions

This tournament will use questions from National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC, specifically Invitational Series #176A-AS, an English-language question set customized for teams in Asia. Teams from outside Thailand are welcome, but must make sure they are not planning to attend another tournament using the same question set. A list of other tournaments using this set is available.

Preparing for the Tournament

We recommend reading the brief rules (and then maybe the full rules), but the basics of gameplay are as follows:

NAQT sells practice questions for teams that would like to prepare more fully for the event. These are tournament questions from previous years, so they are identical in structure and format (but different in content) than the questions that will be asked at this tournament. The most similar questions are the ones named “Invitational Series #xxxA” (ending in “A” is important). All of these questions are written for an American audience, though, so they will have more American and less Asian content than the questions at this tournament.

Teams may also be interested in frequency lists and Power Up study guides or free You Gotta Know articles that give brief overviews of topics that come up very frequently (e.g. “You Gotta Know these ancient empires”).
